Description

What is the theme of O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”? How does O’Brien (through image, symbol, language, and/or character) present this theme to the reader? What do you think Jimmy Cross’ thoughts, behaviors, and/or actions reveal about the story’s theme? DO NOT RESEARCH! For this essay you’ll use the work itself and your own ideas, explanation, and analysis. Use specifically quoted passages from the work for support but no other outside sources

Essay #2: Please only base this essay off of ONLY CHAPTER 1 of Tim O’briens’ “The Things They Carried” The paper should be three pages (750 words). It must be formatted according to MLA guidelines. Please see the Sample MLA Format Guidelines handout in the INFORMATION CENTRAL module. See grading rubric below. Your paper should have a clear thesis statement which conveys the central argument that you plan to support in your essay. Your thesis statement should be developed and supported by reference to specific words, phrases, lines, passages, events and/or ideas in the text under discussion. Assume your reader is familiar with the text that you are discussing; in other words, do not waste valuable space giving a general plot summary. Use Times New Roman, 12 point font. Double space everything. Use a header with your last name and the page number in the upper right of all pages. Use a heading with your name, my name, the name of the course, and the date in the upper left of the first page, under the header. Center your title and capitalize the first letter of all major words. Indent all new paragraphs five spaces (or one tab). Use one-inch margins all around. Include a Works Cited Page for the text you are analyzing (See Wadsworth p. 72 for a sample works cited.) IMPORTANT: Your paper should not use any secondary research. I am interested in your ideas and analysis only!
