The Patriarchal Promises
Clarification Emphasis the LORD repeats promises so the recipients (and readers) will see more precisely what He promises and why the promises are important
Reassurance the recipient doubts whether the LORD is able to fulfill the promises, so the LORD reassures him by repeating the promises in spite of the mans doubts
Renewal the recipient has committed a sinful act, so the LORD repeats the promises to show forgiveness and encourage better behavior in the future
Reward the recipient has done something that showed great faith, so the LORD repeats the promises as an indication of divine approval

Read each passage. Read the stories surrounding these passages, so that you have some idea about the context. Then, choose from the list above which of the four explanations provides the best explanation for why the LORD repeats the promises in each case. Give support for the explanation you choose for each passage (why the promises are repeated here). You might give the same explanation for all four passages, or you might find different explanations; in any case, you must provide independent support for each one. The support you give for each explanation must come from something in each passage and its surrounding context. If you are not satisfied with the four choices, you can propose and support your own explanation.
