Discussion – Week 3
History and Contemporary Ethics
Many historical events, situations, and factors have significantly influenced contemporary ethics. From the experimentation on concentration camp detainees during World War II to medical experiments with incarcerated individuals in more recent times to torture techniques used in the interrogation of accused terrorists; world events continue to play a role in how ethics are formed. Even changes in technology challenge ethical beliefs, standards, and practices. As a result, contemporary ethics are continuously evolving to meet the needs and reflect the views of modern societies. Ethics in general and professional ethics in particular, are not static. History helps to shape the evolution of professional ethics.
