Prompt

In response to the crisis of the Great Depression, FDR’s New Deal programs fundamentally changed to role of government. In our lifetime, we saw a mini version of the same crisis in the Great Recession. Our response was modeled after FDR’s New Deal, but we had the professional government employees in place to run the emergency efforts to stabilize the economy. At the same time, we talk a lot about reducing the number of government employees.

Taking into account our government’s history, should government hire the minimum number of people possible knowing that they save money today but may not be ready for tomorrow’s crisis, or should government stay fully staffed and ready for the worst-case scenario? Think about different kinds of crises in addition to economic ones. For example, should Florida always be fully equipped for a major hurricane?
