Background

nursingAlgebra creates a system for solving problems by using a variable (x, y, a, etc.) to represent something unknown that you need to find and setting up the problem in the form of an equation. Some of the mathematical problems you might solve in daily life include halving or doubling recipes, planning construction projects, or finding patterns in the natural world. These problems may not require a formal algebraic equation; however, learning a method or process for solving problems using Algebra becomes more important as problems become more complex. Beyond simply performing calculations, the skills that can be learned in the class include critical thinking, problem solving, logic and reasoning, analyzing, decision making, and professionalism. Being proficient in mathematical skills may open the door to greater opportunities in your field.
Prompt

Choose one of the problems listed below that covers week 2 concepts (equations and inequalities) and reply.

NOTE: No more than 1 student should respond to each problem as your initial post. The first student to post will get credit. If a student has already responded, you will need to choose a different problem.

Initial Post

1) Solve the problem and show each step you took to find the answer. Check your answer. In paragraph structure, explain each step in your own words.

2) Research and write a short paragraph (100 + words) regarding the application of equations to your program of study. Find a particular equation used in your program (Ex: an equation to calculate oxygen levels on a respirator). Discuss how studying algebra can help you in your future career. If you are currently working in your field, share your personal experience using equations. Include at least one IWG-style reference.
